About the job
The CoSAXS beamline at MAX IV laboratory is offering a 8-week summer student project focused in implementing SAXS analysis scripts in the SasView software

Background and Motivation
Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) is a well-established technique for studying the structure of biological macromolecules in solution.

In complex biological systems, multiple structural states may exist simultaneously. As a result, the measured scattering profiles often represent mixtures of several components, making it challenging and sometimes ambiguous to separate and interpret the individual contributions.

To address this challenge, the SAXS community has previously applied the chemometric method multivariate curve resolution–alternating least squares (MCR-ALS). This approach enables robust decomposition of synchrotron SAXS data by combining information from multiple spectroscopic techniques, such as UV–vis spectroscopy and fluorescence measurements.

SASView (sasview.org) is an open-source software platform for the analysis of small-angle scattering data and is widely used by the scattering community.

Project Goal
The MCR-ALS implementation currently exists in MATLAB. The goal of this project is to implement MCR-ALS tools within SASView, adapting the functionality specifically for scattering data. The project will also focus on integrating these tools with existing SASView libraries and workflows, making the method more accessible and easier to use within the broader small-angle scattering analysis environment.

Main tasks

- Study the existing Matlab code and understand the underlying MCR-ALS workflow
- Translate and implement the method in Python in a way that is compatible with SasView
- Investigate how the new functionality can be integrated into the SasView analysis workflow and user interface
- Test and validate the implementation against reference results from the Matlab version
- Document the implementation and provide example use cases
- Present progress and results to the team at the end of the project.

Expected outcomes: By the end of the project, the student is expected to deliver:

- A working prototype of MCR-ALS analysis in Python for SasView
- Initial validation against reference Matlab results
- Clear documentation of the method, implementation choices, and limitations
- Recommendations for further development and integration into SasView.

Required qualifications

- Ongoing university studies in physics, applied mathematics, computer science, engineering, or a related field
- Programming experience in Python
- Good understanding of numerical methods and scientific data analysis
- Ability to read and understand existing scientific code, including Matlab
- Ability to work independently while communicating progress clearly with supervisors.

Preferred qualifications

- Familiarity with Python modules such as NumPy, Matplotlib and PyQT
- Experience with Matlab
- Knowledge of linear algebra, optimization, or multivariate analysis methods
- Interest in data analysis methods used in physics, chemistry, or materials science
- Familiarity with version control, especially Git/GitHub
- Exposure to small-angle scattering or related experimental data analysis is an advantage, but not required.

What you will gain through the project:

- Hands-on experience in scientific software development in an active research environment
- Experience contributing to an open-source project used by the scattering community
- Exposure to advanced data analysis methods and practical algorithm implementation
- Opportunity to work closely with scientists and software developers at MAX IV.

This is a temporary position, full-time for 8 weeks in June-August 2026.

The SoftiMAX beamline at MAX IV Laboratory is offering an 8-week summer student project focused on extending the lifetime of STXM zone plates through controlled in-house cleaning and process validation.

Background / motivation
In soft X-ray Scanning Transmission X-ray Microscopy (STXM), the zone plate is the main focusing optic and a critical, high-value component. During experiments the zone plate can be illuminated for days to weeks by intense soft X-rays (?250–2500 eV) under vacuum (~10?? mbar). In the presence of residual hydrocarbons this often leads to visible carbon contamination (also observed on other optical surfaces), degrading performance. Developing a gentle, repeatable cleaning process would directly benefit beamline operations and user experiments by keeping zone plates usable for longer.

Project goal
Design, implement, and characterize a gentle UV/ozone-based cleaning method in a controlled atmosphere, and establish a repeatable “dose vs. carbon removal” recipe using test samples. The work will include both hardware and measurement/validation.

What you will do

- Prepare and contaminate test substrates (Si?N? chips) using an in-house carbon deposition system to create controlled “carbon layers”
- Build and instrument a small UV/ozone cleaning chamber (stainless/quartz, fume hood compatible), with basic sensing (e.g., ozone trend, humidity/temperature) and safe operating procedures
- Implement a simple controller/data logger (Arduino or Raspberry Pi) to run reproducible cleaning cycles (timing, purge steps, logging)
- Quantify cleaning performance and repeatability using optical inspection (optical microscope) and, where available, access to advanced characterization methods (potentially including STXM and/or AFM)
- Deliver a short operating procedure and recommended cleaning parameters suitable for routine beamline use, plus a brief report of results.

Who you are

- Background in Physics, Engineering, Electronics, Materials Science, or a related field
- Comfortable with hands-on lab work and basic instrumentation
- Experience (or strong interest) in programming microcontrollers / embedded systems (Arduino, Raspberry Pi, Python, C/C++)
- Interest in microscopy, surface science, vacuum systems, optics, or beamline instrumentation is a plus
- Safety-minded and conscientious with experimental procedures.

What you get

- A practical R&D project with clear real-world impact on a national research facility
- Experience with soft X-ray microscopy instrumentation, vacuum/optics, and surface characterization
- A fun, hands-on build + measurement project with room for creativity and ownership

Practical details
Duration: ~8 weeks (summer 2026), flexible start date.
Location: MAX IV Laboratory, Lund.
Supervision: SoftiMAX beamline staff.

To apply, please send a short CV and a brief note (half a page is enough) describing your relevant experience and why you’re interested.

Your role
As a summer worker, your primary role will be to deploy a parallel license usage of Comsol by a bespoke x-ray optic simulation script (MASH) and, if successful, port the script to the MAX IV computational cluster.

MASH is an elaborate script written in IDL, calling to various codes for ray-tracing, finite element analysis (Comsol), and other tasks related to simulations needed in the process of designing new experimental stations and beamlines. Attempting to run several instances of the script in parallel has currently resulted in License issues with Comsol. In principle, the license allows running an unlimited number of instances of Comsol on a dedicated computer, and unlocking this capability will be your task.

Your main tasks will be:

- Multiple instances of Comsol on a dedicated server
- Porting MASH to the MAX IV Cluster
- Other computational optimisations in MASH.

Qualifications

- Enrolled in a relevant university program (e.g., Computing, engineering, physics or related fields)
- Strong Computational / IT skills, including programming
- Demonstrated ability in programming or full-stack deployment of, complex applications
- Basic knowledge of IDL or Comsol is a plus.

As a person you are organised and take initiative, and enjoy being 'hands-on'. You must be a minimum of 18 years old and fluent in English to apply to this position.

The European Spallation Source is hiring motivated and inspiring people from across the globe to design, construct and operate the world’s most powerful neutron source. We seek ambitious, talented people in a range of fields who are excited about playing a part in the future of science in Europe. ESS is a partnership of 13 European countries and occupies a truly impressive campus based in the beautiful, cosmopolitan university city of Lund, Sweden – just 10 minutes from Malmö and 30 minutes from Copenhagen.

About the role:
We are now looking to appoint a Laboratory Technician to join the Accelerator Division here at ESS. The Accelerator Division is designing, constructing, commissioning and operating a truly one of a kind 5 MW linear accelerator and all of the associated systems for the ESS facility – which incorporate a wide range of custom and off-the-shelf detector, electronic, and software technologies.

This is a crucial role for ESS and it represents a great opportunity for a service-oriented individual who can adapt well to new challenges every day. No two work days will be the same. One day, you could be assembling and testing precision mechanical and optical systems, whilst the next day you could be working with staff at partner laboratories throughout Europe or writing specifications, procurement documents, test procedures and other documentation.

About you:
To thrive with us in the Accelerator Division, you need to be driven, responsive and good at spotting both problems and opportunities. You need to be a highly motivated person who isn’t afraid to get your hands dirty!

Ideally, you will have appropriate technical qualifications, however relevant experience in a similar role is more critical than the type of degree you hold. Examples of recognized qualifications include Technical Assistant degrees, apprenticeships such as the CERN Technician Training Experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. We really need someone who knows how to organize and maintain laboratories full of particle detector systems, electronic instrumentation, optics, and additional scientific equipment. You will use your hands-on skills to assemble and test precision mechanical and optical systems, and you will enjoy collaborations with your colleagues in chemistry, vacuum and other facilities across the ESS campus. It would be a real advantage if you are comfortable using a variety of software to acquire and analyze data, and if you can bring experience of working in a research environment.

We are building ESS from the ground up, so we need someone who is comfortable not only following procedures, but also creating them. We attach great importance to personality and attitude, so we're looking for a real team player: Someone who is sociable, has excellent communication skills, who likes to collaborate with different people and who is committed to helping this amazing project to realise its full potential. We need a hands-on self-starter who is able to work in a structured, organised, responsible and – most importantly – safe way.

The working language of ESS is English, but for this role, it would be considered a significant advantage if you could also work in Swedish as well.

What can we offer?
Aside from the opportunity to work at one of only 4 linear accelerator-based Spallation sources on the whole planet, you can also expect:

• An opportunity to contribute to the future discoveries within neutron science.
• A stunning, brand new workplace filled with innovative minds and brilliant people from across the globe.
• A challenging, exciting and fast-paced work environment.
• Market competitive compensation that is individual and differentiated according to role, responsibilities, individual skills, abilities and achievements.
• 25 days of annual leave, as well as more than 10 days of public holiday and company days off or days with limited working hours.
• Flexible working arrangements and a real work-life balance.
• Relocation support and allowances if needed.
• An excellent quality of life in the highly sought after, family-friendly, beautiful and well-connected Southern Sweden/Greater Copenhagen region.

This a permanent position. You will be based at the ESS Campus in Lund, Sweden - and we’d love you to start as soon as possible. We anticipate that this role will require occasional on-call and shift work in the future.

Interested? We sure hope so.
If you see yourself in what we’re looking for, please provide your CV and motivation letter in English by clicking on “apply” and following the instructions. Please be aware that we can only accept direct applications made via the ESS website.

The closing date for applications for this position is Friday, 17th June 2022.

If you want to know more about this role, please contact the recruitment manager Thomas Shea on [email protected] questions about the recruitment process, contact Daniel Nordin Baker on [email protected]. For trade union information, please contact Unionen representative Conny Wendt at [email protected] or SACO/Swedish Association of Graduate Engineers representative Yngve Levinsen at [email protected].

We hope to hear from you soon!
