The project includes the most powerful linear proton accelerator ever built, a five-tonne, helium-cooled tungsten target wheel, 15 state-of-the-art neutron instruments, a suite of laboratories, and a super-computing data management and software development centre. In the context of its history and future as a scientific organisation, however, it is more than the sum of its parts. It is a brand-new Big Science organisation, and we are building it from the ground up.

About the role:

ESS is at an exciting turning point. It is in transition from being a construction site, to being an operating facility. To support the operation, maintenance and development of the ESS linear accelerator, we are now looking for a scientist or engineer with expertise of normal conducting cavities to join our linac group.

In this role, you will be working within a team of world-class technicians and engineers. The ESS linac accelerating elements include an RFQ, 3 buncher cavities, a 5-segment drift-tube linac, 26 double spoke cavities and up to 120 elliptical cavities of two different families (medium beta and high beta). All of the normal conducting front-end, the spokes and 56 elliptical cavities are already installed for the staged commissioning of the facility at 2 MW power. Commissioning with low power beam is under way, and operation with full beam power is planned to start in 2026 – when the protons can be sent to the spallation target.

Our goal is to have a highly skilled, cross-functional team with a deep understanding of the entire linac. However, in this role, your focus will be primarily on our normal conducting linac elements; which includes the RFQ, the buncher cavities, and the drift tube linac. Within this context, you will:

• Support the ongoing commissioning of normal conducting cavities to ensure reliable performance as ESS transitions to full operation.
• Develop and implement maintenance procedures, diagnostics, and troubleshooting strategies to maximise operational uptime.
• Evaluate NCL cavity performance data to diagnose issues and produce technical reports to guide future improvements.
• Drive improvements to enhance performance, reliability, and efficiency – including work on RF tuning and cooling systems.
• Work closely with other teams within the Accelerator and Operations groups – as well as with in-kind partners – to integrate system upgrades and ensure compliance with engineering and safety standards.

Part of the scope of this role includes driving improvements to our ion source test stand which are needed to upgrade it from its current status as a standalone ion source to a more integrated backup front end for the linac.

Safety comes before everything else at ESS, so you will also work to ensure that all activities comply with ESS safety standards as well as international best practices.

This is a full-time, permanent position based at the ESS Campus in Lund, Sweden.

About you:

First and foremost, we are seeking a dedicated engineer with a passion for high-performance linear accelerator systems. A degree (MSc or PhD) in engineering, physics, or a closely related field, as well as experience of working with particle accelerators is mandatory to be considered for this role.

You should have a deep understanding of normal conducting cavities, radiofrequency (RF) systems, and vacuum technology, as well as significant hands-on experience with cavity conditioning, tuning, and beam commissioning. Familiarity with cryogenics, electromagnetics, and thermal management would be beneficial, as would prior experience of using software tools for RF modelling, simulation, and data analysis (e.g., COMSOL, MATLAB or Python).

To thrive at ESS, you need excellent communication and interpersonal skills – as these are vital for effective collaboration with a diverse group of scientists, engineers, and technical staff within a multicultural, multidisciplinary team. We are looking for someone who can balance an ability to work effectively in a high-pressure, time-sensitive environment where quick decision-making and troubleshooting are critical with the structured, analytical mindset required for focusing on identifying issues and implementing sustainable solutions. As a natural problem solver, you love to generate creative, inventive ideas and explore new perspectives.

If you’re a flexible, focused, team-player with a hands-on, practical approach to engineering challenges with a focus on safety and operational excellence then we hope that you’ll consider this role with us.

To apply:

If you see yourself in what we’re looking for, please provide your CV and motivation letter in English by clicking on “apply” and following the instructions. Please be aware that we can only accept direct applications made via the ESS website. Submit your application as soon as you can and quote the job reference number ESD-64222 in your application.

This role requires additional background screening processes and health and safety checks, which will be performed during the recruitment process.

The project includes the most powerful linear proton accelerator ever built, a five-tonne, helium-cooled tungsten target wheel, 15 state-of-the-art neutron instruments, a suite of laboratories, and a supercomputing data management and software development centre. In the context of its history and future as a scientific organisation, however, it is more than the sum of its parts. It is a brand-new Big Science organisation and we are building it from the ground up.

Come and build the future of Science with us!

About the role:

ESS is at an exciting turning point. It is in transition from being a construction site, to being an operating facility. To help us realise our goal of being the most powerful neutron source in the world, we are now looking to add an entry level Detector Scientist for Beam Monitors to our Detector Group. The Detector Group at ESS has the responsibility for designing, building, testing, commissioning and installing all of the neutron detectors which allow our researchers to "see" their experiments using our neutrons. As our next Beam Monitor Detector Scientist, you’ll be part of ESS's largest and most critical projects and you'll play a pivotal role in delivering state-of-the-art neutron beam monitors for the cutting-edge ESS beam lines.

Working alongside world-class scientists, engineers, and technicians, you'll be at the forefront of in-house development and construction of detector systems. This interesting and unique role, gives you the opportunity to develop and deploy novel neutron beam monitors and other detectors, participate in experimental campaigns to evaluate their performance, perform data processing and analysis, and conduct detector simulations. You’ll also work on the integration of detector systems, where you'll collaborate closely with engineers and technicians to ensure the seamless integration. Additionally, you'll provide support during the installation, commissioning, and operation phases, ensuring the smooth functioning of the detector systems. This multifaceted role combines hands-on development, experimental work, data analysis, and system integration, offering a dynamic and challenging environment for you to thrive.

Adhering to best practices, safety directives, and professional conduct standards, you'll also meticulously document all efforts while nurturing networks of suppliers, collaborators, and partners.

The position is for a fixed-term period of three (3) years and is based at the ESS Campus in Lund, Sweden with frequent travels at other collaborating partners and neutron science centers for testing and evaluating beam monitors.

About you:

Our ideal candidate for this role will hold a PhD in physics or engineering, and can demonstrate a strong academic background in the field. Your expertise should encompass detector instrumentation and detector R&D, particularly in gaseous detector technologies –although proficiency in other detector technologies will also be considered. While experience in neutron scattering and neutron detector technologies is advantageous, it is not mandatory. However, you should possess the hands-on practical skills necessary to prepare experimental setups for detector performance evaluation (including beam tests).

Proficiency in data analysis and programming is essential, with a preference for experience in Python and C/C++. Additionally, familiarity with detector simulation software such as GEANT4, GARFIELD, FLUKA, etc., is highly desirable. Prior experience with finite element method software such as COMSOL or ANSYS is advantageous, but not a strict necessity.

We are building ESS from the ground up, so we need someone who is comfortable not only following procedures, but also creating them. We attach great importance to personality and attitude, so we're looking for a real team player. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are vital for effective collaboration with a diverse group of scientists, engineers, and technical staff within a multidisciplinary team where everyone is committed to helping this amazing project to realise its full potential. We need a hands-on self-starter who is able to work in a structured, orderly, responsible and – most importantly – safe way.

The working language of ESS is English and we need someone who can start as soon as possible.

What can we offer?

Aside from the chance to work at truly unique big science project, you can also expect:

• An opportunity to contribute to the future discoveries within neutron science.
• A stunning, brand-new workplace filled with innovative minds and brilliant people from across the globe.
• A challenging, innovative and stimulating work environment.
• Market competitive compensation that is individual and differentiated according to role, responsibilities, individual skills, abilities and achievements.
• 30 days of annual leave, as well as more than 10 days of public holiday and company days off or days with limited working hours.
• Monthly pension contributions on top of your salary.

If you see yourself in what we’re looking for, please provide your CV and motivation letter in English by clicking on “apply” and following the instructions. Please be aware that we can only accept direct applications made via the ESS website.

Certain roles at ESS require health and safety checks and/or security clearance procedures, which will be performed as part of the recruitment process.

We review applications continuously, so don’t miss out! Submit your application as soon as you can and quote the job reference number ESD-48648 in your application.

The ESS is at an exciting turning point. It is in transition from being a construction site, to being an operating facility. To help us realise our goal of being the most powerful neutron source in the world, we are now looking for a Detector Scientist to join our Detector Group. In this role, you will primarily work as work unit manager and detector scientist for the construction of the MultiGrid detector for the T-REX instrument. T-REX will probe mainly single crystals of low dimensional, topological and frustrated materials, quantum magnets, high temperature superconductors, multifunctional oxides, molecular magnets and functional materials, such as catalysis metals, ion-transport materials, fuel cell membranes, nanomaterials, thermo-electric and magneto-caloric materials.

As well as leading the detector build, this role involves evaluation of prototype modules, neutron testing, analysis, dissemination and stakeholder relations. Key resources will be drawn from the Detector group and other groups within the NSS Project Division as required. In order to ensure that the construction project is delivered on-time, and on budget, and meets the requirements of the T-REX Instrument team, this role comes with wide ranging responsibilities and duties that will include managing the selection of the mechanical engineering solutions; leading the assembly and building of the detector prototypes at the workshops; supervising the procurement of parts; managing the detector construction and commissioning it for the T-REX instrument, and working with the Planning and Coordination Group to develop and maintain a detailed project plan to track progress.

This is a permanent position based at the ESS Campus in Lund, Sweden.

About you:

To thrive with us in the Detector Group, you need to be driven, responsive and good at spotting both problems and opportunities. You need to be a highly motivated person who isn’t afraid to get your hands dirty.

First and foremost, we need someone who is suitably qualified and experienced. For this role, this means a PhD in Experimental Nuclear Physics or a closely related subject, as well as several years of post-PhD experience. This requirement is non-negotiable. Prior experience in neutron detection is essential. Experience in thermal neutron detection is desirable, and experience with time-of-flight and neutron scattering techniques is an advantage.

Our ideal candidate has intimate knowledge of Boron-10 thin film detector development, construction and operation. It will also be considered an advantage if you can bring prior experience of developing and evaluating detector technology for neutron direct spectroscopy, knowledge of thermal neutron background discrimination or any industrial experience with a reputable radiation detector manufacturer.

We are building ESS from the ground up, so we need someone who is comfortable not only following procedures, but also creating them. We attach great importance to personality and attitude, so we're looking for a real team player: Someone who is sociable, has excellent communication skills, who likes to collaborate with different people and who is committed to helping this amazing project to realise its full potential. We need a hands-on self-starter who is able to work in a structured, orderly, responsible and – most importantly – safe way.

The working language of ESS is English and for this role, we need someone who can start as soon as possible. Knowledge of other European languages would be beneficial.

Submit your application as soon as you can and quote the job reference number ESD-38691 in your application.

The Machine Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Post Doc Accelerator Scientist position.

Description of directorate/division
The Accelerator Division is responsible for the design, construction, commissioning and operation of the ESS accelerator. The pulsed superconducting linac, to be built in Lund, will produce a 5 MW average power proton beam, driving the world’s brightest neutron source. The Beam Physics Section is responsible for the study of the dynamics of the protons in the linac, development of the physics software applications for the control room and leading the commissioning and operation of the ESS linac.

Job description and responsibilities:
The Beam Physics section of the Accelerator Division at ESS is opening a postdoctoral position conducting beam commissioning activities of the ESS linac and upgrade studies for the proposed neutrino super beam facility. The position is partly financed through the Horizon 2020 grant from the EU.

The main focus of the candidate will be on preparations, including related beam dynamics studies, control-room scripts developments, and execution of the currently ongoing commissioning activities of the ESS linac. During commissioning, early operations and later in maintenance periods, occasional shift work (including nights and weekends) might be required.

The candidate will also take part in the ESS Neutrino Super Beam (ESSnuSB) study. The study is on the upgrade feasibility of the ESS linac to produce a high-flux neutrino beam which aims at the discovery of Lepontic CP violation. The ESS linac power will need to be increased so that the neutron users will still receive 5 MW beam power while an additional 5 MW will be used for neutrino production. The candidate will, in collaboration with others, work on the design and beam dynamics performance for ESSnuSB.

Required qualifications:
The applicant must have a doctoral degree, at the start of employment, in physics or a related area, with experience in accelerator physics and, preferably, beam dynamics of hadron linacs.
Excellent capabilities to perform independent research shall be demonstrated through publications in peer-reviewed journals and/or at important conferences in the accelerator domain. Solid knowledge of particle tracking and beam optics codes, experience with operation, commissioning and/or performing machine studies are considered an advantage. Experience in automating the data collection, writing scripts and application of Machine Learning in Accelerator problems and availability issues is considered a plus.

Our Ideal Candidate will have:
A strong interest in academic research, an interest to collaborate and exchange competences with other accelerator physicists and is willing to travel for that. Good oral and written proficiency in English is required, as well as the capacity to work both independently and in a team. The candidate shall take responsibility for the project, be innovative and have a genuine interest in physics and technology.
The candidate should show initiative, be proactive with good interpersonal skills and be able to work under pressure (deadlines).
Our work environment is characterised by fast growth, high rate of work, and an international atmosphere with highly academic personnel. You must therefore enjoy the diversity of such and have a personality suited for the challenges it holds.
