MAX IV is a Swedish national large-scale research laboratory hosted by Lund University. It provides scientists from Sweden as well as internationally, with state-of-the-art instrumentation for research in areas such as engineering, physics, structural biology, chemistry and nanotechnology. Fully developed it will receive more than 2 000 scientists annually, conducting ground-breaking experiments in materials and life sciences using the brilliant X-ray light.



250 people are currently employed at MAX IV Laboratory, and 16 beamlines are funded.

The facility is in a ramp-up phase with 10 beamlines now receiving users and 6 more scheduled to be commissioned and built to receive users within the next few years.

 

This position is to support the CoSAXS beamline at a technical level for 1 year, to cover parental leave.

Tasks

- In close collaboration with both beamline teams and engineering, support beamline installations and maintenance work especially when handling vacuum components, complex mechanical parts and delicate optics.
- Participation in the commissioning of the beamline and end-station.
- Participate in the development, design, purchase, installation and testing of new beamline and experimental station components in order to ensure the availability of a competitive and reliable beamline environment.
- Shared responsibilities for operation, maintenance and documentation of the beamline in close collaboration with the team of scientists and engineers at CoSAXS and MAX IV staff.

Qualifications The successful candidate is a technician/engineer with experience from synchrotron work. The candidate must have experience of handling new complex equipment, including thorough practical experience in handling delicate X-ray optics, vacuum components and workshop tools. The candidate must have experience of instrumentation controls hardware and software. They must be able to work independently and to handle a large number of on-going parallel tasks. They must be able to quickly read and understand complex manuals (in English) and have excellent communication skills with all the different functions at the laboratory. A degree in engineering, physics, chemistry or materials science is required.

The position opens an opportunity to gain experience of working at a large scale facility like the MAX IV storage ring. The daily work is varied and covers many technical aspects from vacuum technology, electromechanical control systems, robotics, computer science, cryogenics and many others. You will be joining an international team as they deliver the latest beamline at MAX IV to come into user operation.

About ForMAX

The ForMAX beamline is designed for multiscale structural characterization of materials from macroscopic to molecular length scales, by combining x-ray microtomography with small- and wide-angle x-ray scattering (SWAXS).

A particular focus will be the development of new materials and specialty chemicals from forest raw material, contributing towards our transition to a sustainable, bio-based economy.

We are now looking for a research engineer with responsibility of defining, planning, and implementing engineering projects for the ForMAX beamline.

The tasks include

During construction and commissioning phases:

- Contribute to the detailed design and engineering of the experimental station
- Plan and take part in the installation of the x-ray optics and the experimental station
- Take part in commissioning of the beamline

During operations phase:

- Partake in the design, integration, and commissioning of sample environments
- Share responsibility for operation, maintenance, and further development of the beamline, together with the rest of the ForMAX team

Qualifications

We are looking for a candidate with the following qualifications:

- PhD or engineering degree in a relevant subject
- Documented experience in managing instrumentation projects
- Knowledgeable in mechanical engineering
- Ability to work independently and take initiatives
- Strong social and communication skills
- Good command of written and spoken English

The following qualifications are considered a merit:

- Experience in design/procurement/construction and/or maintenance of complex scientific instrumentation, in particular synchrotron radiation instrumentation
- Knowledgeable in 3D-CAD/CAM software
- Experience in microtomography and/or SWAXS
- Previous work experience at a research facility

The CoSAXS beamline will be a state-of-the-art multipurpose Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) instrument with opportunities to use the inherent high coherence of the MAX IV machine through X-ray Photon Correlation Spectroscopy (XPCS) experiments.

It will offer high brilliance, monochromatic and tuneable X-rays, with outstanding performance in low beam divergence and high X-ray flux. This high-performance X-ray beam will be complemented by an exceptional pool of sample environments and detector systems. Several techniques will be available through modular operation: USAXS/SAXS/WAXS, protein solution SAXS, time resolved SAXS and XPCS amongst others. It will meet the demands of a large and broad community of users.

Tasks

CoSAXS is expected to start commissioning with X-ray beam in late 2019. An expert with significant experience is sought to join the team at CoSAXS to collaborate in the commissioning of the optics. The successful scientist will define and carry out commissioning tasks related to the optical elements over a maximum of 6 weeks in late 2019/early 2020. He/she will characterize the performance and compare with simulations. He/she will be prepare a written report of the commissioning activities. He/she will additionally advise on future commissioning tasks. The scientist should be flexible for the date of employment at MAX IV, as this will depend on the completion of necessary installation work. The 6 week employment may be split into two or more periods, over a 6 month period.

Qualifications

The successful candidate must have a:

- PhD in Physics
- Significant experience of synchrotron based optics design (> 15 years)
- Demonstrated knowledge of simulations of X-ray optics
- Hands-on experience of commissioning and characterisation of synchrotron beamlines and synchrotron X-ray optical elements including monochromators and mirrors
- Publication record in the field of synchrotron X-ray instrumentation, synchrontron X-ray optics and X-ray simulations (ray-tracing)
- IT skills including data analysis using, for example, Matlab and python
- Experience of beamline control software programming at the beamline scientist level (not user-level)
- Expertise in scattering/diffraction and spectroscopy techniques

This is a 6 week, temporary employment.

We are looking for an experienced scientist with expertise in X-ray microtomography, who can help us deliver the ForMAX beamline. In the future the scientist will be part of the team operating ForMAX.

The tasks include:

- Lead the development of X-ray microtomography capabilities at ForMAX.
- Be involved in the design, procurement, construction, and commissioning of the beamline.
- Initiate and participate in activities to strengthen the future ForMAX user community, for example through research collaborations and active participation in meetings, workshops, and conferences.
- Participate in the development of courses and workshops to train new users.

 

Qualifications

We are looking for a candidate with the following qualifications:

- PhD in a scientific area relevant for the ForMAX project and documented post-doctoral experience within such an area.
- Expertise in X-ray microtomographic imaging, preferably on soft or bio-based materials.
- Strong social and communication skills.
- Good command of written and spoken English.

The following qualifications are considered a merit:

- Past work experience at a synchrotron beamline.
- Experience in design, construction, and operation of synchrotron beamlines and/or complex sample environments.

We are looking for a research engineer to strengthen the IT skills within the ForMAX team during installation and commissioning phases.

We are looking for a research engineer to strengthen the IT skills within the ForMAX team during installation and commissioning phases. The candidate will work in close collaboration with the Controls and IT group (KITS) and other beamline teams at MAX IV.

The tasks include:

- Lead the development and implementation of data acquisition strategies (detectors’ data stream, preprocessing, live view, data and meta storage).
- Develop advanced data collection schemes (on-the-fly scans, semi-simultaneous SAXS/WAXS and microtomography experiments).
- Integrate sample environment controls.
- Deliver solutions in a timely and well documented manner, adopting strategies and software methodologies already in place within the KITS group.





Qualifications

We are looking for a candidate with the following qualifications:

- PhD in a relevant field.
- Computer programming skills, with documented experience of programming Python, Matlab, Java, C/C++, or GUIs.
- Documented experience of automation and control of, for example, sample environments.
- Strong social and communication skills.
- Good command of written and spoken English.



The following qualifications are considered a merit:




- Past synchrotron experience
- Experience in SAXS/WAXS or microtomography.
- Documented experience of: 
- Software development for scientific purposes.
- Experience with the Sardana software suite.
- Image processing and 2D detectors.
- Data storage and distributed file systems.
- Parallel computing such as OpenCL, GPU or FPGA.

This is a two-year temporary employment.
