The European Spallation Source is one of the largest science and technology infrastructure projects being built today. The project includes the most powerful linear proton accelerator ever built, a five-tonne, helium-cooled tungsten target wheel, 15 state-of-the-art neutron instruments, a suite of laboratories, and a super-computing data management and software development centre. In the context of its history and future as a scientific organisation, however, it is more than the sum of its parts. It is a brand new Big Science organisation and we are building it from the ground up.

Come and build the future of Science with us!

About the role:

ESS is at an exciting turning point. It is in transition from being a construction site, to becoming an operating facility. To help us realise our goal of being the most powerful neutron source in the world, we are looking to recruit more operators for our Main Control Room. The Operations Group is responsible for ensuring a well-organised and safe operation of the ESS neutron source by controlling and monitoring the facility - including the accelerator and target - as well as necessary support systems and infrastructure.

This is a truly interesting and diverse role where you would be an integral part of the team which operates the world’s most powerful accelerator driven neutron source. In terms of your day-to-day work, you will be part of a skilled, diverse and enthusiastic team of shift workers on a 24/7 shift rotation. Together, the team monitors the complex systems required to generate the neutron beam safely, ensures that the logbook for the shift is updated properly, performs accelerator tunnel search procedure as required, manages the keys to the personnel safety systems, works with technical systems groups and contributes to the development of the operational instructions, procedures and training. Over time you will develop a deep knowledge and understanding of all aspects of the facility operations.

Analysing complex numerical data, verbal data and all other sources of information is a key part of this role, so you must be comfortable with breaking information into component parts, patterns and relationships, probing for further information or greater understanding of a problem and then making rational judgements from the available information and analysis. You will also have the opportunity to get involved with other technical and non-technical projects as necessary, and you will act as a point of contact for questions concerning safety (radiological and conventional) when on shift.

ESS is a user facility where scientists and engineers will come from all corners of the world to perform their studies, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and with a goal of 95% reliability. Therefore, working outside normal working hours is to be expected for this role.

About you:

To thrive with us in the Control Room Operations Group, you need to be driven, responsive and good at identifying both problems and opportunities. You need to be a highly motivated person who is not afraid to get your hands dirty. We need to get the job done, and we strive to become a world leading facility.

First and foremost, we need someone who is suitably qualified and experienced. Ideally, this means that you will have a Technical degree (or equivalent) in either Physics, Engineering or Computer Science. Basic knowledge of particle accelerator and supporting infrastructure systems or prior experience of working at an accelerator facility would be an asset.

Our ideal candidate will have worked in a similar control room environment and followed a 24/7 shift pattern before. Software development skills (e.g. Python, C/C++, Java, etc.) are beneficial, and if you have prior experience of working with EPICS, this would be an advantage.

We are building ESS from the ground up, so we need someone who is comfortable not only following procedures, but also creating them. We attach great importance to personality and attitude, so we’re looking for a real team player: Someone who can maintain good relationships with users and colleagues and who can follow procedures and policies to ensure compliance with legal obligations and safety requirements of the role. You need to be comfortable working productively in a stressful environment and making prompt, clear decisions under pressure, which may involve tough choices or considered risks.

The working language of ESS is English, so it is important that you can express yourself correctly, clearly and concisely both verbally and in writing.

What can we offer?

We offer market competitive compensation, 25 days of annual leave, as well as more than 10 days of public holiday and company days off or days with limited working hours, An attractive compensation scheme for non-normal working hours which is fully in accordance with Swedish regulations and monthly pension contributions on top of your salary.

The position is permanent with six-month initial probation period and you will be based at the ESS campus in Lund, Sweden.

If you see yourself in what we’re looking for, please provide your CV and motivation letter in English by clicking on “apply” and following the instructions. Please be aware that we can only accept direct applications made via the ESS website. This role requires health and safety background checks, which may be required in the final stages of the recruitment process.

The last date for receiving applications is Friday the 1st of November 2024 - but we review applications continuously, so don’t miss out as we will close the position once suitable candidates have been selected. Please submit your application as soon as soon as you can and quote the job reference number ESD-51375 in your application.

ESS is a user facility and it will operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Therefore, working outside normal working hours is to be expected.

About you:

To thrive with us in the Operations Division, you need to be driven, responsive and good at spotting both problems and opportunities. You need to be a highly motivated person who isn’t afraid to get your hands dirty.

First and foremost, we need someone who is suitably qualified and experienced. Ideally, this means that you will have a Technical degree (or equivalent) in either Physics, Engineering or Computer Science as well as basic knowledge of particle accelerator and supporting infrastructure systems. Prior experience of working at an accelerator facility is highly desirable.

Our ideal candidate will have worked in a similar control room environment and followed a 24/7 shift pattern before. Software development skills (e.g. Python, C/C++, Java, etc.) are desirable and if you have prior experience of working with EPICS, this would be an advantage.

We are building ESS from the ground up, so we need someone who is comfortable not only following procedures, but also creating them. We attach great importance to personality and attitude, so we're looking for a real team player: Someone who is sociable, has excellent communication skills, who likes to collaborate with different people and who is committed to helping this amazing project to realise its full potential. We need someone who is able to work in a structured, orderly, responsible and – most importantly – safe way.

The working language of ESS is English, so don't worry if you don't speak any Swedish. For this role, we need someone who can start as soon as possible.

What can we offer?

Aside from the chance to work at a truly unique "big science" project, you can also expect:

• An opportunity to contribute to the future discoveries within neutron science.
• A stunning, brand new workplace filled with innovative minds and brilliant people from across the globe.
• A challenging, exciting and fast-paced work environment.
• Market competitive compensation that is individual and differentiated according to role, responsibilities, individual skills, abilities and achievements.
• 25 days of annual leave, as well as more than 10 days of public holiday and company days off or days with limited working hours.
• Monthly pension contributions on top of your salary.

• Designa, dokumentera, driftsätta och optimera olika operationsscenarier;

The project includes the most powerful linear proton accelerator ever built, a five-tonne, helium-cooled tungsten target wheel, 15 state-of-the-art neutron instruments, a suite of laboratories, and a supercomputing data management and software development centre. In the context of its history and future as a scientific organisation, however, it is more than the sum of its parts. It is a brand new Big Science organisation and we are building it from the ground up.

Whilst others have built telescopes that allow us to look into the furthest regions of space, now we will build a device so powerful it will allow us to the study the smallest objects in the finest detail.

Come and build the future of Science with us!

About this opportunity:

ESS is at an exciting turning point. It is in transition from being a construction site, to being an world-class, operating neutron research facility. As we continue to restructure our organisation in the lead up to first science in 2025, we are looking to recruit a Control Room Operations Group Leader to join our newly formed Operations & Infrastructure Directorate.

As Control Room Operations Group Leader at ESS, you will have a real and genuine opportunity to be an integral part of establishing the procedures, culture and working environment of our Control Room operations team. You will be responsible for all aspects of the work relating to the ESS Main Control Room operators and shift leaders and for handling the daily interactions that shape the structure and culture of the MCR.

The role-specific tasks are therefore centred around managing and leading the operations team, and will include such things as: Performance and Development (P&D) talks; recruitment of operators and shift leaders; producing and implementing training materials; creating shift schedules; being on-duty in the MCR when needed; developing detailed principles for shift planning/scheduling, coordinating with union reps, safety delegates, HR and other ESS business functions and - crucially - ensuring that MCR rules, procedures and guidelines are documented and updated as appropriate so that ESS operates at all times in compliance with all safety and regulatory protocols.

The Control Room Group Leader serves as the primary point of contact for control room operations to all internal and external stakeholders and is responsible for providing necessary documentation for licensing purposes to the relevant regulatory agencies.

About you:

This Group Leader role at ESS is a management level position. As such, we are seeking a well-qualified, highly motivated person who is truly excited by the chance to establish our control room operations, and who is unafraid of the challenges that will inevitably also accompany a high-profile position such as this.

First and foremost, we need someone who is suitably qualified and experienced. This role is highly specialised and technical in nature, so you need to have appropriate technical qualifications and significant (over 5 years) relevant experience at an accelerator facility - or other similar "big science" project. We imagine that the successful candidate would have a minimum of a Master's degree in a relevant technical area, such as particle physics, physics or engineering. We also need someone who can bring significant, demonstrable experience of leading - and building - cohesive, highly functioning teams. Please do not apply for this position if you do not have multiple years of experience from working in a control room operations setting.

We are building ESS from scratch, so we need someone who is comfortable not only following procedures, but also creating and improving them. We attach great importance to personality and attitude, so we're looking for a real team player: Someone who is sociable, has excellent communication skills, who likes to collaborate with different people and who is committed to helping this amazing project to realise its full potential. We want a hands-on self-starter who is able to work in a structured, orderly, responsible and – most importantly – safe way.

The working language of ESS is English and we need someone who can start as soon as practically possible.

What can we offer?

Aside from the chance to work at truly unique big science project, you can also expect:

• An opportunity to contribute to the future discoveries within neutron science.
• A stunning, brand new workplace filled with innovative minds and brilliant people from across the globe.
• A challenging, innovative and stimulating work environment.
• Market competitive compensation that is individual and differentiated according to role, responsibilities, individual skills, abilities and achievements.
• 30 days of annual leave, as well as more than 10 days of public holiday and company days off or days with limited working hours.
• Monthly pension contributions on top of your salary.
• Flexible working arrangements and a real work-life balance.

If you see yourself in what we’re looking for, please provide your CV and motivation letter in English by clicking on “apply” and following the instructions. Please be aware that we can only accept direct applications made via the ESS website.

Certain roles at ESS require health and safety checks, which may be required in the final stages of the recruitment process.

We review applications continuously, so don’t miss out! Submit your application as soon as you can and quote the job reference number ESD-27384 in your application.
